The Israel-Hamas war shows how social media platforms no longer want to deal with the news. AdvertisementAdvertisementNot too long ago, social media was the future of news. To accompany this flow of verified information, Facebook, Twitter and other social media companies built large content moderation teams and partnerships. Reading these, it's easy to see how social media can divide people during difficult times. The social media account posed as a BBC journalist to share this misinformation for engagement.

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri said in a post on Threads that the platform's "biggest safety focus" is "managing content responsibly" around the Israel-Hamas war, adding that the platform is "getting pulled in a lot of directions at once right now." The company has been facing pressure from regulators to be "vigilant" about removing disinformation during the Israel-Hamas war and ahead of upcoming elections. But Meta has also received sharp criticism over its decision to block search results for certain terms on Threads. "The biggest safety focus right now is managing content responsibly given the war in Israel in Gaza," Mosseri wrote. In a blog post published Friday, Meta described the actions it has taken to mitigate content around the Israel-Hamas war since the conflict began.

One brave creator at Meta's "Instagram University" event, which gathered emerging creators, social-media managers, and journalists at Meta's Hudson Yards headquarters on October 6, did just that. "I just have a baby beef with Instagram," a beauty creator blurted out during a Q&A session wrapping up the event. Citing Meta's "really rough" last year, Mosseri said matter-of-factly, "I couldn't afford to run that program in the US." Mosseri did not indicate when exactly the right moment would be to bring back bonus payments to the US, however. This wasn't the only question creators had for Mosseri, who welcomed audience members to tell him what they wanted Instagram to change.

One person noted that, after days of trying to get a room for a meeting at Meta's campus in Menlo Park, a small room became available. They assume the backlog of remote work applications to be "in the thousands." Coming in to be on ZoomOne employee noted their team is mostly in other offices. Others are in the same boat, at least for several more weeks, as they wait for remote work applications to be approved.

Users on Threads are unable to search for COVID-19-related terms including "coronavirus" and "vaccines." It's the latest sign that Meta is reluctant for Threads to become a place for news and politics. Terms such as "vaccination" and "long Covid" also fail to bring up any results and redirect users to external websites. The screen Threads users currently see if they try to search for COVID-19-related topics. The social media giant has attempted to cast Threads as a positive, brand-friendly environment where topics such as news and politics are largely sidelined.

Instagram boss Adam Mosseri revealed on Threads that he had a stint in hospitality early in his career. Mosseri worked as a bartender and waiter and started his own design firm before joining Facebook. Mosseri, who graduated from New York University with a major in Information Design, hasn't listed these roles in his LinkedIn profile. He is now running Zuckerberg's latest venture, Threads – the Twitter-like social media platform that launched earlier this year to much fanfare. Mosseri recently moved back to the US after spending a year in London where he led Instagram from the UK capital.

Instagram is testing a "Close Friends" feature for the feed, the company confirmed. The Meta-owned platform is starting to test a feature that will allow users to post content in their feed to a "Close Friends" audience — similar to the Close Friends feature the app rolled out for stories. "We're testing the ability for people in select countries to share feed posts with their Close Friends," a Meta spokesperson told Insider in an email. Coming to Instagram 🔥 Close Friends feed post. Instagram's push to expand "Close Friends" could signal a bigger change in how the company is thinking about what users want.

Prominent tech reviewer and YouTuber MKBHD weighed in on the age-old Apple vs. Android debate. This video comes after Instagram head Adam Mosseri reignited the debate by declaring Android better. To figure out your own personal winner, Brownlee suggested viewers give each of the 7 categories a rating from 1 to 5 based on how much they care about it. Then, based on the earlier head-to-head, viewers should add up the scores they gave all of the iPhone-won categories and the scores they gave to the Android-won categories. AdvertisementAdvertisementFollowing this weighted system, Brownlee found his personal winner was Android, which he said he uses as his main device while also using an iPhone.

Threads, X's main competitor, will introduce a web version soon, WSJ reported. The web-based Threads is being tested internally, according to Instagram head Adam Mosseri. "We've been using an early version internally for a week or two," Mosseri said in a Threads comment. According to their data, on its highest traffic day, July 7, there were 49 million daily active users worldwide on Androids; the next week, there were only 23.6 million active daily users. As Threads attempts to catch up with X, more updates have been promised by Mosseri and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg in recent weeks, including improved search capabilities.

The Meta-owned company has quietly made changes in recent months that have dramatically reduced referral traffic to media outlets, more than half a dozen publishers told me. The move has put considerable dents in the daily traffic publishers see, with the damage appearing to be more pronounced among those who publish more hard news-oriented content. One publisher told me they’ve witnessed a more than 30% drop in year-over-year referral traffic. The recent changes reduce the already lackluster levels of referral traffic even more. Meta has long argued that publishers need Facebook more than Facebook needs publishers.

When Threads first launched, some Gen Zers shared their excitement for Threads' potential to be the "go-to social media platform for venting and sharing among Gen Z." Insider contacted more Gen Zers to learn their opinions on Threads and find out what attracts them to the apps they use daily. Rose said the text-based X app is for her inner thoughts, while image-based Instagram is for catching up with old friends.

Instagram's new app, Threads, has dominated the discourse around Meta since its July 5 launch. With the launch of Threads, Instagram and its top executive, Adam Mosseri, have been enjoying the limelight. Mark Zuckerberg was "by far the most convicted" about launching Threads as a separate app, Mosseri said on the podcast. "But, the thing is, we're not a messaging app," Mosseri noted. Mosseri has a bias for simplicity and said he recognizes that the Instagram app is overrun with too many features.

Why Threads will never be the new Twitter
  + stars: | 2023-07-23 | by ( Paris Marx | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +12 min
While Twitter became popular as a place to stay informed and get access to critical information, Meta wants Threads to be a hangout space for lifestyle brands and influencers. Enter: ThreadsIn a Threads post, Mosseri said that the company's goal "isn't to replace Twitter" but "to create a public square for communities on Instagram that never really embraced Twitter and for communities on Twitter (and other platforms) that are interested in a less angry place for conversations." In other words, Threads isn't targeting the entire Twitter user base, just a segment of it. On some level, Threads' aversion to Twitter's free-flowing conversation makes sense — discourse on Twitter can get pretty toxic. In its bid for a cash-cow app, Threads is foregoing everything that made Twitter special — no political debate, no train updates, no crowdsourcing breaking news.

Threads, the newest social-media app from Meta, rocketed past 100 million users less than a week after it went live. The app has since been hailed as the Twitter replacement people have been clamoring for since Elon Musk's takeover — and bungling — of the platform. That's because Meta isn't trying to fill the shoes of its competitor. In other words, Threads isn't targeting the entire Twitter user base, just a segment of it.
